Going green is much easier today than many people think. In fact, there are small steps that you can take, and some of them you may have already taken. For example, if you are using a digital camera, rather than a conventional one, you have already taken a step toward going green in your life.

There are a few ways that using a digital camera can help you reduce your carbon footprint. First, a digital camera does not use film. Because of this, less plastic is being used. Many people like to take a lot of pictures, especially on holidays and at family get-togethers. But digital photography has eliminated all the rolls of film. When there is no longer a need for film, it is no longer produced, therefore cutting down on waste.

On top of this, cameras are getting smaller and smaller. If you choose to go with a smaller digital camera, you are reducing the amount of plastic that is being used. The less plastic that is used throughout the world, the less waste is produced.

Most people who choose to go with a digital camera also find that they have most of their pictures on the computer. You may at times find that you want your pictures printed. Finding local printing companies that will print your pictures is easy. The more popular digital cameras become, the more printing companies there are. This can help reduce waste, as well, as only the pictures that you want printed get printed.

With digital cameras, less paper is used, less plastic is consumed, and for many people, the pictures are easier to share. This is a great thing for many people, and if you are going green with your life, you will find that a digital camera is a great option.

Giving Personal Data

With the increase in the number of crimes around the world, it has become difficult your give your personal data to anybody. There is always a fear in the back of people’s mind that it will be misused for some purpose or the other. It is because of this dilemma on the part of the people that most of the countries have clear rules and laws regarding the use of one’s personal data.

While it is possible that the company or organization which requires your personal data would have to show of it to the general public, like if you register in a matrimonial site, it would be possible for them to do it only with your consent. If not, you have the right to take action against and accuse charges of exposing your personal details.

Another factor is that if you are using an electronic device or a network, it would be better to read the terms and conditions before committing yourself to the venture, else it would result in a very long and tiring fight for getting things done in your way. Whenever you give away your personal information, try to be careful of how you do it and you should always be aware of the conditions regarding an agreement.

The protection of data may also be stretched to the area where people give incorrect information about you. If any organization does this then you have the right to make changes in it, and if they refuse you can take action against them. This is so that your personal information is safe and sound without any errors when you give it.
Giving personal data should be done cautiously. Be aware of the rules and laws regarding any thing you are going to do and try to avoid giving the data if possible.

How To Properly Dispose Of Your Computer

Your old computer has finally bit the dust or you need to upgrade your computer.  But how do you properly dispose of your old computer?  Computers are now considered toxic waste, leaking many metals such as lead, gold and silver into the ground, which then get into our drinking water.  Some state will fine you for dumping your electronics in the landfill.  Almost 80 percent of electronic wastes collected in America get sent to China or Africa.  You need to be responsible and check to see if recyclers sell their e-wastes to a third party.

There are many ways that you can dispose of your computer.  Before we get to that, let’s talk about what is on your computer first.  A lot of people will dispose of their computer and never think about erasing their hard drives, leaving all your information available to identity thieves.  Deleting files from your computer does not erase the files from your hard drive.  Formatting the drive will get rid of most of your information, but probably not all of the information.  You can run a strong magnet over your hard drive that will scramble whatever information that is on there, making it impossible to retrieve.  Of course you can physically remove the hard drive and completely smash it.

Now where do you recycle this computer?  If the computer is not more than 5 or 6 years old, donate it to a charity.  If it is older than that it is probably a good idea to just get rid of the thing.  Sometimes the computer manufacturers will take back their equipment.  Many towns and cities have recycling centers that deal with nothing but electronic waste, and will make sure that it is destroyed in an eco-friendly way.  The bottom line is finding something to do with your old computer other than putting it in the dump.  It is our duty as citizens.

Ways To Recycle Fluorescent Light Bulbs

Most of us try to help the environment and cut down on energy consumption in any way that we can.  We recycle and buy products that are energy efficient even the light bulbs that we use.  Most people now buy compact fluorescent light bulbs, which can be identified by their spiral shape.  However, many may not realize that these bulbs contain mercury.  It is a small amount but it is present.  The problem comes in when the bulb burns out and needs to be replaced.  A lot of people just toss it in the trash can and do not give it a second thought.  These little bulbs, when broken, release the mercury and can contaminate soil and groundwater.  Let’s look at ways that you can recycle these bulbs.

Home depot will recycle the bulbs for you.  You just bring them in to your local store and place them in a bin.  You can check your local garbage pickup.  Ask if they accept CFLs or offer mercury recycling.  If your trash is collected by your municipality, they should be able to tell you where you can dispose of these bulbs, if they do not handle it themselves.  Check out local lighting stores.  Sometimes they will recycle CFL bulbs but if not maybe they can tell you where you can recycle the bulbs.

If there is no center near you that will recycle CFL bulbs, you can store them until you find somewhere to store them.  Placing them in a cardboard box that is lined in heavy plastic will contain the mercury if the bulb accidentally breaks.  Place them out of the way so breakage is less likely.  Sometimes there will be a charge to recycle CFL bulbs because they have to be dismantled.  A couple of dollars is worth it to know you are doing your part to improve the environment.

Home Craft Tips: What to do With Those Unwanted Newspapers

SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - NOVEMBER 10: A South Kor...

My life is so hectic that I always promise to cancel our newspaper subscription but I always end up forgetting. The next month I promise to cancel it out again and I forget. Needless to say that this pattern has gone on for a number of years. Over those years I have developed a huge stockpile of newspapers and don’t know what to do with them.

That is when I decided to see what crafts I can do with the newspapers in my house. Here are some of the creative craft ideas that I came up with.

Pinatas. My kids are always talking about trying out the pinatas that they see in the store. However I can never justify paying the amount that the store is asking for the pinata. Old newspapers can be used to make pinatas. It might be a bit messy but it’s a fun craft idea to do with your children.

Origami. I always wanted my kids to learn origami but as most of the shapes we tried don’t end up looking like the items they were supposed to, I couldn’t justify paying for official origami paper. Newspaper can be cut up into squares to be used for origami paper. It’s cheaper, gets rid of the excessive newspapers and allows my family and I to explore the world of origami.

Jewelry. Some recycled newspaper can be used to make small bead-like jewelry items. This is a bit complex and takes a bit more skill then the previous two craft ideas, but the jewelry that comes from making newspaper beads can be very pretty and breathtaking. Each bead has a unique look based off of how much print is available on the paper and what color the newspaper is.

With all these creative craft ideas it’ll make you not want to cancel that newspaper subscription and see what you can create!

4 Things You Didn’t Know You Could Recycle

Many of those who recycle may often wonder why so much focus is put on things like plastic bottles and aluminum cans, while other things seem to fall to the wayside and are ignored. What they may not know is just because there isn’t a slot for it at the recycling center, doesn’t necessarily mean that it is not recyclable. Here are four items you may not have known were fully recyclable.

Eyeglasses – Contact a local Lions club for the place nearest you where you can drop off old eyeglasses or frames. The Lions Club is a long time charity organization that makes sure those who live at poverty levels still have a usable pair of glasses.

Tennis Shoes – Nike sponsors a great program called Reuse A Shoe that can turn the soles of old shoes into athletic and playground area flooring. Additionally, a program known as One World Running sends shoes that are in good condition to athletes in Latin America, Africa and Haiti.

Cell Phones – A program known as Collective Good will actually refurbish your used cell phone and sell it to someone in a developing country for an affordable price versus the local economy. Also, a program known as DonateAPhone will use your used cell phone to give a family dealing with domestic violence issues a way to call for help.

Foam Packing – Any local shipping store should accept foam peanuts for reuse in future shipping. You can also call a Plastic Loose Fill Producer Council to help you locate a local drop off site. For the larger foam blocks contact someone at EPSPackaging for more information on where to drop off locally.

There are many places available that do not openly advertise their recycling capabilities. Look around for the best places near you.

What to Do With Old Computers

Old Computer Graveyard

They say that old computers are thrown away or recycled at a rate of at least 50 million units per year. That is a lot of junk for our already over-burdened landfills, so what should be done with the old dinosaurs? Do we just continue dumping the useless hardware or is there a better way?

Why Not to Throw Computers in the Landfill
Computers are not made of organic materials so they will never decompose. That is the most basic and obvious reason. How long can they be dumped in the landfill before they overtake a city? Another very important reason to keep them out of the dump is that they are created using a variety of highly toxic metals and chemicals. A single personal computer for the desktop can contain more than eight pounds of lead. They also contain mercury, arsenic and other toxic chemicals that should never be allowed in our waterways.

What to Do With an Old Computer
The most earth-friendly thing a consumer can do with their old computer is to send it to a company that will refurbish it. Some computers are too far gone to be of any use even if it could be refurbished, and these old computers will never shine like a beautiful Mikimoto ring. Other computers could be of great use to someone out there without any refurbishing at all if the consumer does not require the latest and greatest technology available.

If a computer is really of no use at all anymore, it can be dismantled down into its most basic components. Some of the good parts can be reused and the worthless ones can be soaked in an acid bath or melted down to retrieve the precious metals from the circuit boards and the wires. A substantial amount of gold can be recovered from a scrapped computer.

How to Securely Destroy Data Before Recycling

While recycling data medium is a noteworthy cause and helps to protect the environment, there is a right and a wrong way to do it. Before any recycling of computers or hard drives takes place, it is important to delete the data first. This is particularly important where computers and computer hard drives are concerned.

There are a few ways to completely wipe a hard drive clean without actually destroying the drive. Using these methods make it possible to donate or even sell a used computer. The two most popular methods include writing meaningless data onto the drive or reformatting. Special software is used to write random codes onto the hard drive which effectively overwrites the original content of the drive. This makes it impossible to recover any previously stored data.

There are many free data wiping software options on the Internet that can do a good job of deleting information from a hard drive. This overwriting process is generally done thirty-five times if the Gutmann Method is used. If the chosen method is the military’s DoD5220, then the drive is overwritten only three times. With the DoD method, a series of ones are written onto the disk, the second overwrite is zeros and in the final pass, random numbers.

While not foolproof, a full reformatting of the hard drive will to some extent delete information. In fact, the best way to be assured that highly confidential information is totally unrecoverable is to destroy the hard drive itself. This can be done using an industrial strength shredder. There are also companies that offer this service.

The extent to which one should go to ensure data protection prior to recycling or even donating an old computer depends on what the computer was used for previously. Information that is particularly sensitive requires the most stringent removal methods.
